By now, you've likely heard about Feliway and its companion product Feliway MultiCat, two pheromone-based behavioral modification products available from CEVA. In late summer 2015, both products went off the market for about six months while the manufacturer made a physical change to the diffuser unit, re-launching the product in January of this year to great success. It is one of the top-selling products here at AffordableVet, and something any cat owner -- particularly owners of multiple cats -- should know about. We have received overwhelmingly positive response to the product and find that it does make a noticeable difference for most cat owners.
So what do they do?
Feliway is designed to manage the behavior of a single cat. If your pet is scratching, spraying, hiding, or scared of activities like going to the vet, Feliway calms their stressful behaviors.
The Feliway website says, "Studies have shown that the use of Feliway is 90% effective in helping reduce or eliminate scratching and urine spraying. A significant reduction in these behaviors is usually seen within 7 days."
Feliway MultiCat, on the other hand, is designed to relieve inter-cat tension in multiple cat households. 60% of cat owners report tension between the various animals in their homes. Feliway's website writes, "Feliway MultiCat can help all cats living under one roof feel more safe and secure with their surroundings and ease animosity. It’s a copy of the feline appeasing pheromone mother cats produce during lactation. Cats of all ages sense this pheromone and it provides a calming effect that cats can recognize throughout life."
As many people with cats have more than one in their life, the MultiCat product is an even bigger seller than the standard version.
How do they work?
By mimicking the cat's natural facial pheromone, Feliway creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat's local environment. As a result, Feliway can be used to help comfort and reassure cats while they cope with a challenging situation such as moving or traveling. Feliway helps reduce or prevent unwanted behaviors caused by stress. This is all achieved through a completely natural process.
How long do they last?
Feliway diffusers are sold packaged with one 30-day supply of the product. From then on, additional 30-day refill units can be purchased. The manufacturer of Feliway recommends getting a new diffuser after every six refills, as the constant strain on the unit will cause it to wear down. Excessive use of a single diffuser can lead to the unit melting or causing other issues.
What if my cat is anxious or stressed when we are away from home?
Feliway is also available as a wipe and a spray, which is great for traveling. The spray can easily provide a calming atmosphere in carriers or during travel, and the wipe can be used to apply the calming pheromones of Feliway directly to the animal.
